As I started writing this post, I realized something—no one ever taught me how to shave. Ladies, is this the same for you or is it just me? Never in my youth did my mom or any older woman in my family inform me about shaving. In fact, if anything I was discouraged from doing it. I was told that shaving would make my hair grow back thicker and coarser than it had been before. Of course, now, I know that’s only a myth. But even back then I didn’t listen, or rather I should say, I really didn’t care if the hair under my arms might end up growing back like a man’s beard. There was no way in hell I was going to go through puberty with armpit hair! In the end, I taught myself how to shave, relying completely on instinct, a disposable BIC razor, and an old can of my dad’s shaving cream.
Twenty years later, I like to think I’ve mastered a few things on the art of shaving especially on those tricky areas, i.e. under the arms, around the knees, and the ever so difficult bikini line. (Although I have to say, my tip for the bikini area and shaving is only do it if you have to! Otherwise, book an appointment for a wax instead.) Here are five other tips I’ve learned along the way that will guarantee you’ll get a close shave and smooth skin with absolutely no irritation.
How to Get a Close Shave and Smooth Skin
1. Exfoliate before shaving. Exfoliating your skin before shaving will remove any oil and dead skin cells from the surface allowing your razor to get as close as possible. This body scrub is my all-time favorite and it smells so good.
2. Shave after you’ve taken a shower. And make sure it’s a warm shower. The steam from a warm shower will open your pores and soften your hair, which will minimize skin irritation.
4. Use a man’s razor. The blades on men’s razors are sharper and more precise because men’s hair is thicker and coarser. I like using this shaving kit from Harry’s (more on them later). I got the closet shave on my underarm hair using their razor than with any other razor I’ve used in the past.
5. Shave from the bottom to the top when shaving your legs. For your legs you want to shave against the growth of hair. Start from your ankles and work your way up to your knees and thighs. Your underarms are a different story. Underarm hair grows every which way. So for the smoothest shave, pull your skin taut and shave up, down, and sideways. This is the one time you can go with and against the grain.
Harry’s Shaving Sets
The awesome folks at Harry’s were kind enough to send me a box of their Truman shaving set to try out. At 13, I had used my dad’s shaving cream, but I hadn’t really used a man’s razor before. I was definitely curious to give it a try. I’ve used all types of razors in the past. Ones with four blades, ones with five blades, even ones with the shaving gel already built in. My quest for the closest shave ever was still unfulfilled so I had to give it a go.
So what do I think of using a men’s razor?
It’s genius! (Just read tip number 4 above.) The blades are definitely sharp, but don’t worry, it’s not scary sharp. It’s the perfect sharpness so that instead of going over the same location over and over, something I do all time under my arms, I get a clean shave in just one to two strokes. This is something I’ve desperately been looking for in a razor because going over the same spot more than once causes irritation, annoying ingrown hairs, and skin discoloration.
Harry’s Truman Set includes one razor with a rubberized handle for an easy grip, one 4oz. can of foaming shaving gel, two replacement razor cartridges, and one blade cover for traveling. All of this costs just $15! How affordable is that? I love their shaving gel. It not only smells amazing, it has natural ingredients, like aloe and cucumber to refresh and hydrate.
By the way, Harry’s came in the mail beautifully packaged. Valentine’s Day is only a few weeks away and I think one of Harry’s sets would make an awesome gift for the S.O. I’ve got my eye on the Winston Set, which would make a very handsome gift to give. The razor’s handle is made partly of chrome so it couldn’t be more perfect for the style discerning man in your life. I especially love that you can get it engraved with his initials on the handle. What a very special touch.
