The older I get, the more attention I’ve paid to my skin’s beauty routine. Gone are the days when my skin felt hydrated no matter how many parties I attended, how late (or early, depending on how you look at it) I got home, or how many times I slept with my makeup on. The latter, I’ve learned as soon as I turned 30, is a cardinal sin that results in dire consequences on my skin. Acne with dry patches in my 30’s? No, thank you!
The problem I find with this time of year is my skin is bound to suffer somewhat. What can I say? It just freaks out. Can I blame it? Hell no! With a calendar full of holiday parties, a busier work schedule than ever, and don’t even get me started on the cold, dry winter air, how could it not?! Does this sound familiar? If it does, keep calm and reading on.
From the time I turned 30 to my current age of 32, I’ve had two years to perfect my pre-holiday party beauty routine, and I’m more than happy to share my tips and tricks with you all. Trust me, everyone will be asking you, “How on earth do you get that beautiful, dewy glow?” And then you can say, “Well, good genes of course!” 😉
Prep is Everything
Two to three weeks before I know I have a party to go, I like to start prepping my skin. It may sound like an exorbinant amount of time to get started, but I think the extra time allows for the maximum benefits of any treatment you apply to your skin to really show. Plus, it acts as insurance, just in case your skin reacts negatively to anything you decide to do to it. Anyone remember what happened to Samantha on Sex and the City when she got that chemical peel before Carrie’s book launch party? If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, it involved a very large hat, and a veil, and it wasn’t pretty.
My Party Prep Beauty Routine
- Start eating healthy. It may sound like a cliché, but you really are what you eat. For me, a good time to start is right after eating my weight in food during Thanksgiving. After that, my diet basically consists of fruit, plenty of vegge, and omega-3 rich proteins, like salmon and sardines. Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
- Add collagen to my diet. Collagen is a fibrous protein that holds our body together. It is found in our bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. Think of it as our body’s natural scaffolding because it is what gives us strength and structure. It is also what keeps the skin from looking firm, tight, and youthful. As we age, our production of collagen unfortunately deminishes, resulting in wrinkles. I now know why it’s so important to start replenshing the collagen in my body sooner rather than later. So everyday after my workout, I make sure to have one collagen peptide smoothie with a recipe specifically for achieving healthy and glowing skin. I’ve included two of my favorite smoothie recipes at the end of this post so keep reading on for those. Vital Proteins sent me some of their collagen products to try a few weeks ago and lovelies, let me tell you, I’m honestly hooked (more on them later)!
- Pamper myself with a hydrating facial mask once or twice a week. I love facial masks! I don’t really have the time (or the money, for that matter!) to go to a spa every once a week, so instead I light a candle, take a nice warm bath, and slather on a luxurious feeling hydrating mask for ten minutes. During the winter months I often suffer from dry flakes and dull skin. I’ve been looking for a really good hydrating facial mask to combat my winter skin for ages, especially one that won’t break the bank. This rosewater mask by Andalou is perfection and it’s just under $12! It seriously feels like a moisturing veil of whipped air on my face. It feels so good, I sometimes don’t even want to rinse it off! After ten minutes, my skin feels soothed, refreshed, and revived.

So I mentioned earlier that Vital Proteins sent me some of their collagen products to try out. To be honest with you, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Being as I am only in my early thirties, collagen wasn’t exactly something in my beauty routine radar. “Do I even need collagen?”, I asked myself as I tried my very first collagen concotion. Knock on wood, I don’t have any wrinkles, just yet! But I definitely know my skin is showing some small signs of age that can eventually lead to wrinkles. Ever since I turned 30, my combination skin has become noticeably drier and duller than just a few years before. So when I read about the beauty and health benefits of taking collagen supplements, I was all down for giving it a go.
I haven’t had any dry patches on my face since I’ve been having one collagen smoothie a day for three weeks. I’ve also noticed my skin looks more radiant than ever before. In the past, I’ve slathered every thick, emollient cream on my face, with very poor results of keeping my skin hydrated. In fact, it’d have the worst effect on my combination skin, resulting in greasy areas in some places and dry, flaky areas in others. Putting on makeup only made it worse! I thankfully haven’t had that problem since using Vital Proteins, so I think the collagen has definitely helped. Plus, collagen is also good for my overall joint health and digestion so it’s a win-win really!
If you’d like to give collagen powders a try, I highly recommend checking out Vital Protein’s website. All of their products are free of preservatives, sugar, gluten, and hormones. Just add any of their powders to your hot or cold beverages. Most of their collagen powders are unflavored so in theory you can add them to anything. Based on experience, however, I’ve found it doesn’t taste all that pleasant if you just add it to a glass of water. I’ve also tried mixing their Marine Collagen powder with a cup of green tea and let’s just say, it’s not quite my cup of tea. My preferred way is adding one scoop in a smoothie.
Adding one of their unflavored powders to a fruit-based smoothie goes down a treat, but you also try out their Vanilla & Coconut Water flavored Collagen Peptides powder in my first receipe below and let me tell you, it is really good!
